Year 2

Cambridge Class 2012 to 2013

In Year two the expectation is that all children continue to develop independence and confidence that will prepare them for the transition into Key Stage two at the end of the year. Throughout the year the children will be asked to work at a pace which enables them to reach their full potential in all subjects.

In numeracy there will be a ten minute focus on mental maths strategies each day as part of the normal maths lesson. The children will build upon their knowledge of written strategies by using a number line to support their ideas. Throughout the year the children will have opportunities to use and apply their knowledge and skills to real life problems and puzzles.  In class we will be learning our times tables and it would be greatly appreciated if the children were supported at home through learning their two, five and ten time tables.

In all areas of the curriculum there will be many opportunities for the children to write for a variety of different purposes. Writing in class will be very much tailored to the interests of the children and will often follow the topic theme.  Literacy lessons will take place on a daily basis and focus on sentence structure, organisation of the text and ensuring that the content of the writing interests the reader. In the afternoons there will be a guided reading session.  All children will be heard read once a week as part of this session. The children will bring home individual reading books each evening.  It would be supportive if you could listen to your child read each evening and record a comment in their reading record.  Only if this is adhered to will the children be able to change their book the following day.

We are looking forward to a happy, hardworking and successful Year Two!
