The Learning in Peterborough Class

Our aim is that the children have fun as they learn and activities will be planned that incorporate the more formal tasks of learning sounds, words and reading, writing and number as well as the opportunity to play outside, developing social and physical skills. Planned play increases the opportunity for problem solving, negotiating, experimentation, language development and much. much more.

We work through Themes which provide the focus for the learning for each term. However, we also have mini topics within each theme which run for a week or maybe two weeks. For example, this term our Theme is 'Stop, Look, Listen' but mini topics within this may include road safety, senses, transport.

During the first half term we will be working particularly on learning to write our own name, using the correct letter formation. Also we will be learning to count objects accurately, pointing to each object as we say the number name and knowing that the last number we say is the number of objects in the group. We will be learning 4 sounds of the alphabet each week, along with essential common words needed to begin the reading process e.g is/at/on/and. We will quickly learn to blend sounds together to read words and segment words into sound units for spelling. What a very busy time the children will have!!!!!!!

Obviously learning the School Rules will also play a major part of our first few days in school, although as you will see from the photos, the children are already well on the way to achieving some already!!!!!!
